A skilled tradesperson who installs, maintains, repairs, and removes boat lift systems used to raise and store boats out of the water, typically at docks, marinas, and waterfront properties.
They work with mechanical, structural, and electrical components to ensure lifts operate safely and efficiently in harsh marine environments.
Typical responsibilities include:
Installing new boat lifts, including pilings, beams, cradles, and motors
Removing and replacing existing or damaged lift systems
Inspecting lifts for wear, corrosion, or structural damage
Repairing or replacing cables, pulleys, motors, and gear systems
Troubleshooting operational issues (lifting failure, uneven movement, etc.)
Coordinating with electricians when power or wiring is involved
Operating heavy equipment such as cranes, barges, or forklifts when required
Skills and knowledge:
Understanding of mechanical systems and load-bearing structures
Familiarity with marine construction and waterfront conditions
Basic electrical awareness (though licensed electricians handle wiring)
Ability to read site plans and equipment specifications
Experience with tools, rigging, and safety procedures
Work environment:
Boat lift technicians often work outdoors in coastal or waterfront areas, dealing with sun, wind, tides, and sometimes difficult access conditions. The job can be physically demanding and may involve working over water, lifting heavy materials, and operating machinery.
